Joe’s Wine of the Week: Spellbound Petite Sirah, California 2015

Spellbound Petite Sirah, California 2015

$17.99 at Crush Wine & Spirits in Bryant, Arkansas

Intense color.  Bouquet of rich blackberries and blueberries, vanilla bean, and coffee.  Rich, full-bodied flavors and smooth tannins.  Good balance between ripe fruit and structure.  Aged for a few months in both French and American oak.

Rob Mondavi (Robert Mondavi’s grandson) and Paul Hoffman started this label.  They wanted to craft wines that are relaxed enough to enjoy every day yet high quality.  They sourced grapes from Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley, Santa Barbara, and Lodi.  The Petite Sirah is sourced from Lodi, Alexander Valley, and Dry Creek Valley.  The wine is produced at Sonoma Wine Company.

In 2006, Hoffman sold his interest.  Spellbound is now owned by Folio Fine Wine Partners, a Michael Mondavi Family Co., Napa.  Michael is Rob’s father.  Spellbound makes Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir.

Inspiration for the label comes from the celestial spirit of the lunar calendar.  All life’s phases are worth remembering.  The moon’s phases have been used throughout the ages to mark time.
