Flora Springs Winery was founded in 1978 by siblings John Komes and Julie Komes Garvey with their respective spouses, Carrie Komes and Pat Garvey.  They named the winery for John and Julie’s mother and the natural springs that run through the property.

This property that became Flora Springs Winery is rich in history.   It first became a winery in 1885 when James and William Rennie, brothers from Scotland immigrated to Napa Valley and planted 60 acres of vines and built a wine cellar.  Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the winery in 1900.  Over the next three decades, the property changed hands three times.  Phylloxera and prohibition prevented the estate from having any commercial success.  The Martini ended up buying the winery in 1933.

Jerry & Flora Komes

In 1977 Jerry and Flora Komes bought the property from the Martinis which included 325 acres of land and 60 acres of vineyards.  A year later the Flora Springs Winery was born by their children and operated as a family business.  In the 1980s the family rebuilt the still-standing winery structures that were destroyed by the 1900 fire and expanded their holdings.  By the 1990s they were receiving critical acclaim for their wines due to the efforts of Ken Deis who had been the winemaker since 1980 and Pat Garvey who managed the vineyards.  Their success allowed them to build a state-of-the-art tasting room in 1995 on Route 29.

Ken Deis

In 2008 Napa Valley native, Paul Steinauer, became the winemaker after having been Deis’s assistant since 1990.
